LED PCB Assembly Services
LED PCB assembly brings LEDs, drivers and supporting components together on a circuit board to create a working light engine or electronic module. OrinewPCB coordinates PCB fabrication, 100% brand-new original components, assembly and agreed testing for high-mix, low- and medium-volume projects.
Bring your board files, LED specifications and target delivery date. We review material availability, manufacturing details and acceptance requirements together, so your quotation covers the complete assembly scope.
- New original LEDs & components
- Nine-step quality workflow
- Multiple models & small batches
A complete LED assembly starts with three decisions
LED part number, color bin, output and drive conditions.
Board construction, mounting and the final heat sink.
Electrical, lighting and thermal checks with clear limits.
Built around your product mix
Coordinate prototype and repeat builds across different board versions, LED colors and driver configurations.
Original parts, sourcing value
Deep relationships with manufacturers and distributors support competitive material pricing and practical availability.
Quality and delivery together
Review the quality plan and the material schedule before committing the build to production.
From bare board to tested assembly
What can your LED PCB assembly project include?
Define the deliverable first: a populated LED board, a driver and light-engine set, or an integrated module. The quotation should identify the parts, operations and tests included at each level.
PCB fabrication
Review the board stackup, surface finish, solder mask, thermal pads and panelization against the released design. Substrate selection follows the product’s heat path and electrical requirements.
LED & component sourcing
Source the specified LEDs, driver ICs, power components, connectors and passives. Include ordering suffixes and LED bin restrictions in the BOM.
SMT & mixed assembly
Coordinate LED orientation, placement, soldering and through-hole connections where required. Package handling and the actual board assembly determine the process.
Drivers & control electronics
Include driver boards, dimming interfaces and control components in the same project. Define power input, output current and control behavior before assembly.
Mechanical integration
For an agreed module scope, include cables, connectors, heat sinks, optics and housing interfaces. Confirm drawings, mounting details and integration responsibilities.
Inspection & verification
Combine assembly inspection with the electrical and lighting checks your product needs. Set coverage, operating conditions, limits and reporting requirements during quotation.

Specify performance before purchasing parts
Which LED requirements should you put in the BOM and test plan?
Part number, bin information and operating conditions belong together. A package size or a nominal color temperature alone does not define an interchangeable LED, and a board that turns on does not establish its specified optical performance.
| Requirement | What to provide | Why it changes the build |
|---|---|---|
| LED identity | Manufacturer, full ordering code, package and approved alternatives. | The footprint, polarity, lens, voltage and process limits must match the selected part. |
| White-light color | Correlated color temperature (CCT), color rendering index (CRI), any R9 requirement and the allowed color bin. | Nominal CCT does not define the permitted color variation within or between batches. |
| Brightness or spectrum | Required flux or wavelength, bin restrictions, drive current and the measurement conditions. | Output depends on the LED selection and operating conditions, rather than LED count alone. |
| Color matching | Permitted chromaticity region or SDCM requirement, and rules for mixing reels or lots. | Standard deviation of color matching (SDCM) describes color variation; agree how finished assemblies will be accepted. |
| Electrical operation | Input range, string configuration, driver current, power limits and connector pinout. | The driver and LED string must remain compatible across the intended operating range. |
| Dimming & control | Control interface, dimming range, firmware revision and intended controller or dimmer. | A power-on check cannot establish dimming compatibility or addressable-LED behavior. |
| Thermal installation | Ambient conditions, mounting orientation, enclosure, heat sink and thermal interface details. | A temperature result from a bare board may not represent the installed product. |
| Final acceptance | Pass/fail limits, coverage, sample quantities, fixtures and required records. | These inputs determine testing effort, fixture preparation and the quotation scope. |
For color-critical products, reference the manufacturer’s binning specification and your permitted bin combinations. Lumileds’ explanation of LED binning illustrates why color control and operating temperature need to be considered together.
Board construction and assembly work together
Choose the LED board around the complete heat path
Aluminum metal-core PCBs (MCPCBs) are an option for LED thermal management, but the metal base is only part of the system. Review the LED thermal pad, board dielectric, mounting interface and heat sink together; do not choose a board from the base-metal name alone.
| Construction to review | When it may fit | What must be checked |
|---|---|---|
| FR-4 with a designed thermal path | Indicator boards and designs where the calculated heat load can be managed. | Copper spreading, thermal vias, electrical isolation and the actual temperature rise. |
| Aluminum MCPCB | LED modules requiring heat transfer into a chassis or heat sink. | Dielectric thickness and properties, pad layout, isolation needs and the mounting interface. |
| Other metal-core or specialty substrates | Projects whose heat density or insulation requirements call for a different construction. | The complete stackup, manufacturability, material availability and assembly compatibility; capability is confirmed during review. |
| Flexible LED assemblies | Shapes or installations that require a flexible circuit. | Bend location, support during assembly and the installed thermal path; flexibility does not replace heat dissipation. |
Check the installed configuration
Specify where temperature is measured, the input and drive conditions, ambient temperature and when the reading is taken. Board surface temperature and LED junction temperature are different quantities.
Cree LED’s thermal management application note explains the thermal stack and measurement methods. Use the selected LED’s data sheet and the agreed installation to set project limits.

Assembly control
Control LED handling, polarity and soldering before the batch
LED assembly needs a process matched to the selected package and the populated board. A universal oven setting or a package-size label is not an adequate production instruction.
-
Review the released build data
Reconcile BOM references, placement data, drawings, polarity and LED ordering codes. Resolve differences between symbols, footprint markings and the manufacturer’s pin assignment before placement.
-
Prepare materials and handling instructions
Follow the selected LED’s storage, moisture-sensitivity and handling requirements. Keep contamination and mechanical pressure away from optical surfaces; use package-appropriate tooling.
-
Validate soldering on the real assembly
Review land pattern, stencil apertures and thermal-pad soldering requirements. Establish the reflow process against component limits and the board’s thermal behavior, then inspect the initial assembly.
-
Confirm the first article
Check the board revision, parts, orientation and agreed electrical or lighting behavior. Release the batch against the approved configuration and acceptance plan.
-
Complete the agreed delivery scope
Perform the applicable inspections and tests, complete any defined driver or mechanical integration, and verify labeling and protective packaging before shipment.
Quality with a defined acceptance boundary
A nine-step quality workflow, with LED-specific acceptance
OrinewPCB prioritizes quality through 100% brand-new original materials and a nine-step inspection and testing workflow. For an LED build, the quotation must also define the relevant lighting checks: what is tested, under which conditions, how many units and what constitutes a pass.
Original component supply
Our manufacturer and distributor relationships support genuine parts and competitive sourcing. Quote the exact LED and driver ordering codes, availability and approved alternatives together.
Bin & configuration control
Record the required color and brightness restrictions in the released BOM. Review substitutions and bin changes with you before accepting a different configuration.
Agreed inspection coverage
Distinguish assembly workmanship, hidden-joint inspection and product performance. Confirm the required methods, fixtures and records for your build.
| Check to define | What it can establish | What you must agree |
|---|---|---|
| Visual / optical assembly inspection | Presence, orientation, alignment and visible workmanship. | Inspection criteria and coverage. AOI does not measure luminous flux or see a hidden thermal joint. |
| Hidden solder joints | X-ray can help evaluate joint features or voiding where the construction permits. | Relevant packages, inspection method and acceptance criteria; there is no universal void limit for every LED. |
| Power-on & electrical operation | LED string operation, input behavior, current and specified electrical functions. | Supply conditions, fixture, limits and whether coverage is all units or sampling. |
| Dimming / control behavior | Response to the specified controller, dimmer, channel or data sequence. | Interface, test sequence, firmware and permitted behavior over the operating range. |
| Optical performance | Specified flux, color, spectrum or other lighting characteristics with a suitable measurement setup. | Method, stabilization, temperature, calibration, reporting and in-house or external test arrangements before quotation. |
| Thermal verification | Temperature at defined locations in the agreed operating configuration. | Ambient, mounting, heat sink, measurement points, stabilization and limits. |
| Burn-in or reliability screening | Behavior during an agreed stress or operating sequence. | Duration, load, environment, monitoring and failure rules. Screening alone does not prove a lifetime claim. |
Not every listed test is automatically included. Confirm specialized optical, environmental, safety and compliance testing requirements before placing the order; the agreed test plan and quotation govern the scope.
High mix · Low and medium volume
Keep LED variants separate without fragmenting the project
Different CCT options, driver currents and connector arrangements can share a product family while requiring different builds. Use a configuration matrix to identify each model, board revision, LED code, driver setting and label.
For example, two white-light versions of the same board should have separate BOM variants and unit identifiers if their approved LED bins differ. Shared components can still be reviewed together for purchasing value.
Specify whether a repeat order must match an earlier approved sample, and identify what may change when the original bin or part becomes unavailable.
Before releasing several models
- Assign a unique assembly revision or variant code.
- Define LED part numbers and permitted bin combinations for each variant.
- Identify driver settings, firmware and cable differences.
- Separate first-article approval and test limits where the versions differ.
- Match unit labels, packaging and delivery quantities to the approved model.
For orientation questions, our LED polarity and PCB connection guide explains how to reconcile circuit symbols with the actual component data.
Material value and practical delivery
What determines LED assembly price and lead time?
LED availability, bin restrictions, board construction and the verification scope often matter as much as placement quantity. OrinewPCB uses deep cooperation with manufacturers and distributors to pursue favorable material pricing and delivery options while maintaining original-component requirements.
Price the complete build
Include the PCB, all components, setup, tooling, inspection, agreed tests and any mechanical integration. Compare quotations against the same LED codes, bins and acceptance conditions.
Identify the critical material
A particular color bin, driver or connector may set the schedule. We assess supply during quotation and discuss approved options rather than silently replacing a specified part.
Plan the earliest practical shipment
Review files, parts, production readiness and test-fixture preparation together. The confirmed schedule depends on the released scope and material availability; repeat builds benefit from controlled revisions.
Review availability before locking the batch
Share your BOM, LED bin rules, quantities by model and target date. We can assess sourcing constraints alongside the PCB, assembly and test requirements.
Beyond the populated board
Connect LED boards, drivers and product integration in one RFQ
A lighting module may also require a driver board, control electronics, cables, a heat sink and a housing. State whether you need assembled boards only or an integrated deliverable, including which parts you supply and which parts we should source.
For RGB or addressable modules, define channel order, logic levels, control protocol and the expected startup state. Our guide to SMD LEDs with built-in ICs provides background; the selected component’s data sheet and your test procedure remain the manufacturing reference.
When the project extends to a finished module, our box build assembly service explains the mechanical, wiring, firmware and acceptance information needed to define the complete scope. Product certification, ingress protection and lifetime claims require their own agreed evidence; board assembly alone does not establish them.

Engineering & purchasing questions
LED PCB assembly FAQ
Can I request a small batch with several LED versions?
Yes. High-mix, low- and medium-volume one-stop assembly is a focus for OrinewPCB. Provide quantities and a BOM or configuration matrix for each version so setup, sourcing and tests can be quoted correctly.
Can you source all the components?
Our turnkey scope can cover the PCB, LEDs, drivers, connectors and supporting components. State any consigned parts and no-substitution items. OrinewPCB uses 100% brand-new original components.
Is aluminum always the right LED PCB material?
No. The right construction depends on heat load, isolation, geometry, installation and cost. Review the entire thermal path before choosing FR-4, MCPCB or a specialty construction.
Can an equivalent LED be used if my part is unavailable?
Review it before approval. Package size alone does not establish equivalence: check pinout, forward voltage, current, optical characteristics, bin requirements, lens geometry and the assembly process.
Does a light-up test confirm brightness and color?
No. It can show that the LEDs operate under the test conditions. Quantified flux, color or spectrum acceptance needs defined measurements, limits, conditions and suitable equipment.
Do you include burn-in or photometric testing?
Specify these in the RFQ. Methods, fixtures, duration, coverage, records and any external test arrangements must be agreed in the quotation; they are not automatically part of every order.
What if I need a driver and housing as well?
Include them in the same project inquiry. Supply mechanical and electrical interfaces, mounting details, drawings and final acceptance criteria so the integrated scope can be assessed.
How quickly can an LED assembly order ship?
We pursue the earliest practical delivery based on parts, file readiness, quantity and test preparation. A reliable commitment follows the BOM and project review, rather than a universal lead-time promise.
